Ah, love is in the air.
House Speaker John Boehner today sided with President Obama, saying NSA leaker Edward Snowden is traitorous for leaking top-secret information and putting Americans in danger.
“He’s a traitor,” the Republican said in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. “The disclosure of this information puts Americans at risk. It shows our adversaries what our capabilities are. And it’s a giant violation of the law.”
Boehner endorsed President Obama’s characterization of two government surveillance programs, which allow the NSA to spy on phone calls made in the U.S. as well as information on foreign suspects collected from major internet companies, ABC News reported.
“The president outlined last week that these were important national security programs to help keep Americans safe, and give us tools to fight the terrorist threat that we face,” Mr. Boehner said. “The president also outlined that there are appropriate safeguards in place to make sure that there’s no snooping, if you will, on Americans here at home.”
“I’ve been briefed on all of these programs,” he added. “There is no American whose going to be snooped on in any way unless they’re in contact with some terrorist around the world.”
“I believe that when you look at this program and what it does, you’ll find that we protect the privacy of the American people, while at the same time, giving us tools to keep Americans safe and to go after the terrorist,” he said.
Edward Snowden was aware of an immoral and illegal program being carried out by the feds and saw himself as having no other option but to expose it. Yes, he violated orders to keep it secret, and he will be prosecuted for it.
The important thing is that Mr. Snowden refused to keep his head down and just “follow orders,” putting the rest of his life in jeopardy in order to confirm Americans’ belief that the government IS spying on us. We knew it all along, and now we have proof.
Boehner’s remarks make it official. There is no right or left anymore. Only right and wrong… and our government is on the wrong side of it.
